Why did so many people came to John the Baptist to be baptized?

5 Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him,

The people as a whole considered him to be a true prophet (Matthew 21:26), and as such people came from throughout the province of Judea and beyond to hear him preach (Matthew 11:7–9).1
