1. Structure and outline

The structure and outline of Joshua 11:16-23

Joshua 11:16–23 (ESV)

16 So Joshua took all that land, the hill country and all the Negeb and all the land of Goshen and the lowland and the Arabah and the hill country of Israel and its lowland

This final section of chapter 11 is a self-contained unit, since it opens and closes with the same phrase: Joshua took the entire land.1 The unit can be divided as follows:

  • A geographical description of the land that was taken (Joshua 11:16–18)

  • A theological explanation for the defeat of the Canaanite kings (Joshua 11:19–20)

  • A confirmation that the strongest enemies have been destroyed (Joshua 11:21–22)

  • Rest, just as the Lord promised (Joshua 11:23)
