Who or what is the morning star?

Revelation 2:28 (ESV)

28 And I will give him the morning star.

The term “morning star” is used of Jesus himself in Revelation 22:16. Yet the reference here cannot be to Jesus since he is here the one giving this star. The term “star” had been mentioned in Balaam’s final oracle as a parallel to the “scepter” who would arise from Israel to crush Israel’s enemies (Numbers 24:17). As a parallel to “scepter,” the term “star” then indicates power and authority. Christ Jesus himself is the fulfillment of the prophecy of Numbers 24:1–25. As the “morning star,” his arising heralds the dawn of the era of his kingship.  Those who conquer get to reign with Christ in this era. See also Daniel 12:3; Matthew 13:43.
