Ahijah turns to speak more about the calamity from which the son will be removed by death. Through Ahijah the Lord announces that he will cause another king to reign over Israel who will cut off, that is, destroy, Jeroboam’s household.

The Hebrew phrase that is translated into that one word is a complicated one. Literally it reads, This the day. And what even now?
We do not have to assume that God was saying that a new king would begin his rule within those 24 hours. It may mean that the process that will result in the downfall of Jeroboam's ruling family line truly begins with the divine pronouncement of the fearful event. Even that day, the wheels were in motion that would destroy all of his male descendants.
