  2. Exposition

What is asserted by the writer’s expression of faith?

Lamentations 3:22 (ESV)

22 The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end;

Despite hopelessness, the writer looks to the future—although it may be to the distant future—with hope. His hope is expressed in God’s steadfast love and unceasing mercies. This is reminiscent of Job’s expression: Though he slay me, I will hope in him (Job 13:15). Although circumstances have changed for the worse, the unchanging constancy of God’s love and mercies for his people provides a firm ground of hope for the future.1 Therefore, the basis for the writer’s expression of faith and hope is expressed in two ways, namely, God’s steadfast love and unceasing mercies.
