1. Lamentations 2:5 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

How is Jerusalem’s reaction to God’s judgment described in the last line?

Lamentations 2:5 (ESV)

5 The Lord has become like an enemy; he has swallowed up Israel; he has swallowed up all its palaces; he has laid in ruins its strongholds, and he has multiplied in the daughter of Judah mourning and lamentation.

The result of God’s judgment is the multiplication of mourning and lamentation. The Hebrew word play (ta' tiniyei wa'ániyd) adds to the effect of mourning and lamentation as an ongoing state.1
