How did the locusts destroy the vine and the fig tree?

Joel 1:7 (ESV)

7 It has laid waste my vine and splintered my fig tree; it has stripped off their bark and thrown it down; their branches are made white.

As a mighty army, the locusts laid waste to the vines and destroyed the fig trees. The young branches are broken. As the descriptions of later eyewitnesses also testify, they not only rob the trees of fruits and leaves, but also attack the branches and bark. In this way, they stripped off their bark and threw it down. This refers to the inedible parts of the peel and wood, as well as small twigs. In this way the branches have become white.1
