Doing all things for the pleasure and glory of the Lord

Haggai 1:8 (ESV)

8 Go up to the hills and bring wood and build the house, that I may take pleasure in it and that I may be glorified, says the LORD.

There are all sorts of things we can pursue in this life. But it is the pursuit of the pleasure and glory of God that lies at the core of our existence. His greatest pleasure and glory are found when he sees us treasuring the temple, yes, taking pleasure in God, finding satisfaction in his presence in our life. How do you please God today? The Bible is full of ways to do so (for example, Luke 1:61; Mark 14:6; Romans 14:18; Colossians 3:20; 1 Timothy 2:1–3; 1 Timothy 5:4). But at its heart, what God takes pleasure in is faith working through love. Hebrews says, Without faith it is impossible to please [God], for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him (Hebrews 11:6). Living by faith pleases him, even faith as small as a mustard seed. The Lord takes pleasure in imperfect efforts to please him. And so that is the first question to ask about any and all work in the church and kingdom: does this bring pleasure and glory to God who is my treasure?
