The promised restoration described in Jeremiah 33:1–26 ends in Jeremiah 33:14–26 with the promise of a Davidic king. This promise flows from the description of the returning shepherds in Jeremiah 33:12–13. Already in Jeremiah 23:5–6, in the face of Judah’s failing leaders, the Lord had promised to raise up for David a righteous branch
to rule over his people. Here the Lord says, Behold, the days are coming when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah
(Jeremiah 33:14). The Lord is going to fulfill his promise of a Davidic king that will unite his people once again. The timing of this fulfillment is simply described as the days are coming
and seem to point to something that follows the provision of leadership described in Jeremiah 33:12–131. The reality is that even after the return from exile, no Davidic king rules over Israel again in the Old Testament. This promise of a king from the line of David is only fulfilled with the coming of Christ.
15 In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David, and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.
