This final passage (Jeremiah 33:1–26) in the Book of Consolation (Jeremiah 31:1–33:26) is introduced by saying that, The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah a second time, while he was still shut up in the court of the guard.
Jeremiah is still in prison because of the message he has proclaimed regarding the Babylonian invasion and Zedekiah’s fate (see Jeremiah 32:1–2). This links the messages that follow in Jeremiah 33:1–26 with the message of Jeremiah 32:1–441. Jeremiah 33:1–26 also has a series of messenger formulas in Jeremiah 33:2, Jeremiah 33:10, Jeremiah 33:12,Jeremiah 33:17,Jeremiah 33:20, Jeremiah 33:25, all introducing a message from the Lord. These are similar to the message formulas in Jeremiah 32:36, Jeremiah 32:42. Each of these messages are private messages that the Lord gave to Jeremiah while in prison, which the prophet is now revealing to the people in written form. All of these messages form part of the Lord’s response to Jeremiah’s prayer in Jeremiah 32:16–252.
