Why does Jeremiah pray about the siege mounds that have come up to the city and that the Lord has given the city in to the hands of the Chaldeans?
Having expressed what he knows to be true about the Lord’s character and actions towards Israel in Jeremiah 32:16–23, Jeremiah’s prayer now turns to the more immediate circumstances in which he prays. The Babylonians have laid siege to Jerusalem and are about to overrun the city and destroy it. What you spoke has come to pass, and behold you see it.
The judgment that the Lord has told Jeremiah to proclaim for 40 years is finally happening. The phrase you see it
seems to express something of the turmoil Jeremiah is feeling. He knows that everything is unfolding before the Lord exactly the way the Lord intends, and yet he cannot reconcile it with what the Lord has told him to do.
24 Behold, the siege mounds have come up to the city to take it, and because of sword and famine and pestilence the city is given into the hands of the Chaldeans who are fighting against it. What you spoke has come to pass, and behold, you see it.
