1. Jeremiah 31:14 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

How will the Lord “feast the soul of the priests with abundance”?

Jeremiah 31:14 (ESV)

14 I will feast the soul of the priests with abundance, and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness, declares the LORD.”

The blessings in the land are not just about material blessings. The Lord says, I will feast the soul of the priests with abundance. The Hebrew word used for abundance is desen and its literal meaning is fat things. It refers to the fat portion of the offering that was burnt as an offering to the Lord in the temple. The priests shared in some of these portions as their provision in the land (Leviticus 7:32–36). So, this does point to abundance in the land that even the priests share in, but it also speaks of restored worship in the temple as the people come in their droves to the Lord in faith and thankfulness1.

The poem ends with the Lord saying that his people shall be satisfied with my goodness. Physical and spiritual provision from the Lord’s presence, his goodness, will leave his people in a state of contentment and satisfaction. This too points forward to the new creation (Revelation 21:3).
