These words go to the very heart of the covenant the Lord made with Israel at Mount Sinai. As a people rescued from Egypt, they would be his special people and he would be their God. To know the Lord and to be known by him was the greatest privilege of the covenant (Exodus 19:5–6; Leviticus 26:12; Deuteronomy 27:9). The Lord will establish this privilege again with his restored people.
22 And you shall be my people, and I will be your God.”
