Is living with Christ a present or future event?

Romans 6:8 (ESV)

8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.

In short

Living with Christ is

  1. a present and future event; or

  2. a future event.

Most likely, living with Christ is a present and future reality. We can detect this because the context strongly suggests that when we become Christians, we acquire new life in Christ. Paul says this in Romans 6:4 when he says we were crucified into his death in order to walk in newness of life. Further, in Romans 6:11 Paul exhorts the Romans to consider themselves dead to sin and alive to God. Of course, we also know from Romans 6:5 that we will not only gain new life in the present when we become Christians, but that we also have future resurrection hope. So we believe we will live with Christ in the present and in the future.

Some contend that Paul has hope for future resurrection in mind. These point out that Romans 6:8b has to do with holding a belief. In particular, Paul does not say that we will live with Christ, but that we believe we will live with Christ. This is important because it indicates a belief we hold in the present, and the object of that belief is a future event. Further, there is a correlation between Romans 6:5, where Paul refers to being united to Christ’s resurrection, and Romans 6:8, so that living with Christ is being resurrected as he was. Thus, living with Christ is a future event.

This view is plausible, although there is reason to think that even if Paul emphasizes the future resurrection hope we have to live with Christ, he does not overlook the present reality of living with Christ entirely. For he may have in mind the abstract notion that when one converts to Christianity, we believe we will live with Christ. So while living with Christ is an object of belief, it is an event that takes place in the present, on the condition that one dies with Christ. Further, while there is parallel between Romans 6:5 and Romans 6:8, Paul also clearly mentions walking in newness of life in Romans 6:4 and being made alive to God in Romans 6:11, referring in both cases to a present reality. Thus, we he mentions living with Christ in Romans 6:8, there is likely some present reality behind this.

In the end, it is likely best to take it that believing we will live with Christ is to believe in a future resurrection, but that this belief impacts our present reality. So there is a present and future reality to living with Christ.

Interpretation 1:
Living with Christ is a present and future event.

Summary:

Paul explains that we have died with Christ, and since we have died with Christ, we know that we will live with him both in the present and in the life to come. In fact, future hope for resurrection life casts a shadow on our present existence, so that already now we live with Christ.

By dying with Christ we have hope on two fronts. We have future hope that we will eventually live with Christ forever, and we have current hope that Christ will enliven us to live with him now.

  • Douglas Moo

  • Leon Morris

Minor differences:

Our authors agree that there is an already-not yet aspect to Paul’s teaching in Romans 6:8. That is, already we live with Christ in some sense, but there is also a future resurrection life to hope for.

There is a difference between Douglas Moo, and Leon Morris and John MacArthur. For Moo, the future resurrection life is primarily on Paul’s mind. That is, when Paul says we believe we will live with Christ, he is primarily referring to our future resurrection life. Still, this future resurrection life is also a present reality because it casts a shadow on our current existence so that there are present implications of this promise of future resurrection life.1

On the other hand, Morris and MacArthur contend that Paul primarily has the present in mind. For Morris, as the believer identifies with Christ in his death he enters newness of life. Morris goes on to explain that while there is a future aspect to Romans 6:8, we should not let that future aspect obscure the fact that the believer lives with Christ now.2 MacArthur agrees with Morris: Paul is here speaking primarily about our living with him in righteousness in this present life.3

Interpretation 2:
Living with Christ is a future event.

Summary:

Christ died and rose from the dead. Since believers have died with Christ, we can be sure that that we will one day be raised to a new resurrected life

Minor differences:

Our authors agree that when Paul refers to believing we will also live with Christ, he has in mind future resurrection. There are no noteworthy differences between them.
