We know nothing about the man. His father’s name, Jeshua,
was so common that we ought not to automatically identify him with the other men of the same name mentioned in Ezra and Nehemiah. His function as ruler of Mizpah
should not be confused with that of ruler of the district of Mizpah
(Nehemiah 3:15). His jurisdiction was limited to the town itself, perhaps similar to our office of mayor.
