Having made it clear in Jeremiah 29:16–19 that the false prophets message of peace and imminent restoration is a total denial of the Lord’s message of further judgment on Judah, the Lord now returns in Jeremiah 29:20–23 to address directly the presence of the false prophets among the exiles, that was mentioned in Jeremiah 29:15. The Lord mentions two prophets, Ahab the son of Kolaiah and Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah. These two prophets are not mentioned anywhere else, but the Lord says they are prophesying a lie to you in my name.
The content of this lie is not given, but the context makes it clear that these are two of the false prophets who the people claim the Lord has raised up
in Babylon (Jeremiah 29:15) and just like Hananiah (and Shemaiah who will be mentioned in Jeremiah 29:29–32), they are proclaiming that the exile will end soon and are encouraging the exiles to rebel against Babylonian rule. The Lord makes it clear, however, that he did not send them. Rather, he will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he shall strike them down before your eyes.
Those in exile are not somehow beyond the Lord’s reach or care. He is the sovereign LORD of hosts, the God of Israel
who is in control of everything in his world and he uses Nebuchadnezzar as his servant to protect his people from being led astray by the lies of false prophets.
21 ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, concerning Ahab the son of Kolaiah and Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, who are prophesying a lie to you in my name: Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he shall strike them down before your eyes.
