Some striking words were spoken by Jesus to his disciples that Thursday night. In fact, he had also said them in the preceding years. Did they fathom the depth of his words? Their questions so far certainly did not give an indication that they did. What will happen when their Master is no longer with them? Will things turn out all right? Will limited people truly gain insight into heavenly matters?
That is why Jesus once again speaks about the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will give to them in his name. He will provide clarity to them. He will ensure that they come to understand more and more what their Master meant by his words and deeds. This also happened after the outpouring of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. In the same account of the Gospel of John this can be seen. In chapter 2, we read that Jesus speaks about the temple that will be destroyed and rebuilt after three days. These were puzzling words, even for his disciples at the time. How does this relate to the body of Jesus himself? It was beyond their comprehension. But through the enlightenment of the Holy Spirit, it will dawn on them later. When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken
(John 2:22; see also John 12:16; John 13:7). The characteristic work of the Holy Spirit continues to be that he wants to give us insight into what Jesus said and did on earth. He inspired the writers of the Bible to do so (see 2 Timothy 3:16; 1 Peter 1:11; 2 Peter 1:21).
