Commentary on John 14:21 (Summary)

John 14:21 (ESV)

21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”

Here, John 14:15 resonates again. Once more Jesus emphasizes the great importance of keeping his commandments. Apparently, we humans need this extra encouragement. By nature, we do not particularly like all sorts of regulations. Yet, by keeping Jesus' commandments, we can show how much we love him. It is not for nothing that the longest Psalm in the Bible is a continuous hymn of praise to God's precepts. This poet discovered that keeping God's law is proof of love for God. Listen to this: I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word. Deal bountifully with your servant, that I may live and keep your word. Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law (Psalm 119:15–18).

The ending of John 14:21 is surprising: and I will manifest myself to him. This indicates that Jesus comes very close to those who truly love him—profoundly close. One day, this will visibly happen at his return to earth. But before that, the Holy Spirit will give experiences of the love of God the Father and of Jesus to everyone who keeps their commandments with heartfelt love. Such a person will experience what Psalm 25:14 says: The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear him, and he makes known to them his covenant.
