Commentary on John 14:15 (Summary)

John 14:15 (ESV)

15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

On that late Thursday evening, Jesus wants to tell his disciples even more. He knows what is awaiting him in just a few hours. That Friday will be the most difficult day on earth for him. And a fierce storm will also rage among his disciples. Will their love for him endure? Will they grasp God's will for him? And will they understand what all this means for them?

Therefore, he offers a strong exhortation, No matter what opposition you may encounter, keep my commandments diligently (see also John 13:34–35). Let your love for me be revealed in this. You sense here how much Jesus solicits the love of his disciples. He desires that his disciples—and his people in later centuries—will thus gain and maintain insight into God's love for the world (John 3:16). And that they—and we—will respond in love by keeping his commandments.
