Commentary on John 14:10 (Summary)

John 14:10 (ESV)

10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works.

Jesus emphatically states that there is an unbreakable unity between him and the Father. Two points of recognition demonstrate this. First, Jesus does not speak in a personal capacity but he is the mouthpiece of the Father. And second, Jesus emphasizes that everything he does is the work of the Father. In other words: in him, the Invisible Father manifests himself so clearly. Jesus reminds his disciples—and us!—of what he said earlier: I and the Father are one (John 10:30). And a few hours later, in his prayer to the Father—and they may hear and we may read this—he says: I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, so that they may be one, even as we are one (John 17:11; see also John 11:21).
