These words contain a rebuke. Earlier, Jesus had pointed out to the disciples the close connection between him and the Father. Jesus had said loud and clear, Whoever believes in me, believes not in me but in him who sent me. And whoever sees me sees him who sent me
(John 12:44–45). There at the Passover table, they could see the Father through Jesus. But oh, how limited their vision was. How blind we as humans can be while seeing... How necessary it is for God to open our eyes to his nearness.
John the disciple, the writer of this Gospel, was later able to see this clearly. He writes: No one has ever seen God; God the only Son, who is at the Father's side, he has made him known
(John 1:18; see also John 1:14). So we are fully informed. Through Jesus, God the Father comes to us. The Son has revealed the Father's love to us. We have every reason to praise this good God for this exceptional perspective.
7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”
