What happened during Jesus' Passover meal with his disciples was utterly shocking. Jesus knew what was soon about to happen. He told his disciples beforehand, In two days, as you know, it is the Passover, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified
(Matthew 26:2). He knew that someone in his inner circle would hand him over. When the disciples heard this, they were shocked. Jesus was also deeply troubled by this (John 13:21). And when he then added, Where I am going, you cannot come
(John 13:33), it completely puzzled them. And when they then heard that Peter was going to deny their master three times (John 13:38), it was for them as if they faced a deep abyss. They were completely confused—and understandably so.
Jesus sensed their fear and encouraged them with the words, Don't be anxious.
He then continued to tell them, Trust in God, put your trust in me also
(NLV). This, in particular, points to the close bond between God and Jesus. There is a deep unity between Father and Son (see John 10:30; John 12:44). Jesus is as trustworthy as God. Therefore, they—and we too—have every reason to believe his Word and promises.
