1. Isaiah 50:7 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What kind of help is in view?

Isaiah 50:7 (ESV)

7 But the Lord GOD helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame.

The Servant says, The Lord GOD helps me. The verb often refers to military help, by either human armies (Isaiah 30:7; Isaiah 31:3) or divine intervention (2 Chronicles 14:11; 2 Chronicles 25:8; 2 Chronicles 26:7). The verb is also used for help in nonmilitary contexts (for example, Psalm 22:11; Psalm 107:12; Psalm 119:173, Psalm 119:175). In the present verse it seems to point not so much to outward, physical help so much as spiritual help, divine support for the Servant to endure his many sufferings, especially those of contempt and humiliation (Isaiah 50:6). 1
