6I gave my back to those who strike, and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard; I hid not my face from disgrace and spitting.
Striking the back, public flogging was ordinarily the punishment of evil men (Deuteronomy 25:2; Proverbs 10:13; Proverbs 19:29; Proverbs 26:3).1 But also prophets were flogged, unjustly (Jeremiah 20:2; Jeremiah 37:15).2
6 I gave my back to those who strike, and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard; I hid not my face from disgrace and spitting.
