What does it mean to try the heart?

Psalm 17:3 (ESV)

3 You have tried my heart, you have visited me by night, you have tested me, and you will find nothing; I have purposed that my mouth will not transgress.

David submits himself to the Lord’s examination of his heart. For God examines not only David’s outward actions but also and especially his thoughts, desires, decisions, and ultimately the purity of his devotion to God.1
