Who will build a house for the Lord?

2 Samuel 7:12–13 (ESV)

12 When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.

An offspring to succeed David will build a house for the Lord. One of David’s sons will be the one to build a more secure and permanent dwelling for the ark. In the course of history, this person was shown to be Solomon (1 Kings 8:2; Acts 7:47). He constructed the temple in 1 Kings 6:1–38. Even so, his kingdom did not last forever but was divided after his death (1 Kings 11:31–38). Jesus Christ, however, is the true obedient Son and true house builder (Matthew 26:61; Matthew 27:40; Mark 14:58; Mark 15:29; John 2:19–22) who receives an eternal throne (Matthew 19:28–29) and an imperishable kingdom (Luke 22:29–30; John 18:36).1
