The death of Uzzah had made David realize that the Lord is almighty and that he must be worshipped appropriately. It was expected that the king of Israel should learn to fear the Lord (Deuteronomy 17:18–19) and thus this is an appropriate and good response from David.1
9 And David was afraid of the LORD that day, and he said, “How can the ark of the LORD come to me?”
