Why did Hiram send messengers and cedar trees to David?

2 Samuel 5:11 (ESV)

11 And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, also carpenters and masons who built David a house.

From Hiram’s perspective, David was an ally against a common enemy (the Philistines). He would have been eager to secure friendly relations with David.1
