  2. Exposition

Who was Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud, and what was his responsibilities as a recorder?

2 Samuel 8:16 (ESV)

16 Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the army, and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder,

Jehoshapat is mentioned here for the first time. He will remain David’s recorder throughout his reign (see 2 Samuel 20:24) and he will also join Solomon’s court (1 Kings 4:3).1 The task of the recorder was most likely to keep a record of the deeds of David so that future generations can remember and know what the Lord has done (see Psalm 105:5). He would also oversee the archives of official records and disseminate royal commands.2
