What was the purpose of Joram’s visit with David?

2 Samuel 8:10 (ESV)

10 Toi sent his son Joram to King David, to ask about his health and to bless him because he had fought against Hadadezer and defeated him, for Hadadezer had often been at war with Toi. And Joram brought with him articles of silver, of gold, and of bronze.

The king of Hamath wanted to sign a treaty with David which is why he sent his son to him. The bringing of gifts also testifies to the importance of David and suggests that he was the superior party in any agreement that was made.1
