1. Jeremiah 23:28 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Why does the Lord say, “Let the prophet who has a dream tell the dream, but let him who has my word speak my word faithfully”?

Jeremiah 23:28 (ESV)

28 Let the prophet who has a dream tell the dream, but let him who has my word speak my word faithfully. What has straw in common with wheat? declares the LORD.

We have seen already that in the Old Testament the Lord does sometimes use dreams to reveal his word. However, in Jeremiah’s day it seems that dreams were being misused by false prophets to formulate a message that supposedly came from the Lord, but was the total opposite to Jeremiah’s message. The Lord, however, makes it clear that the false message will be exposed by his true word. ’Let the prophet who has a dream tell the dream, but let him who has my word speak my word faithfully. What has straw in common with wheat?’ declares the Lord. The prophet who claims to have heard from the Lord via a dream can tell his dream, but the true prophet must faithfully speak the Lord’s word, and the difference between the two messages will become abundantly clear because they will be like straw and wheat. The Lord’s true word is like wheat that feeds and strengthens whereas merely human dreams are like straw that is empty and worthless.
