How do Christians overcome evil with good?

Romans 12:21 (ESV)

21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

Evil manifests in a variety of different forms in the world. It hurts Christians, threatens us, tries to drag us along with it, and sometimes persecutes us. To counter this temptation the Christian has to employ the good as his weapon: Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good (Romans 12:21).This is a disparate struggle, but one where it is nonetheless important for Christians not to restrict ourselves to a defensive position. Evil will, of course, eventually lose to the good, because the devil is no a match for God. It is precisely for this reason that the good is a stronger weapon that the mere rejection of evil. Towards the end of the letter, in Romans 16:20, Paul indeed proclaims the promise of victory: The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.1
