How can Christians outdo one another in showing honor?

Romans 12:10 (ESV)

10 Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.

By regarding each other higher than ourselves we show honor one another. This is what Paul has in mind when he writes in Romans 12:10 that we must Outdo one another in showing honor. Already within the circle of Jesus’s own disciples it had become apparent how difficult it really is to regard another person higher than yourself, for the disciples often argued regarding the question which of them was the most important. Furthermore, from the apostolic letters we learn that various forms of human self-conceit caused problems even in the earliest churches. Paul therefore says that if you desire to lead (proegoumenoi), you must do so first and foremost out of respect for the other person.1
