What is “the Dung Gate”?

Nehemiah 2:13 (ESV)

13 I went out by night by the Valley Gate to the Dragon Spring and to the Dung Gate, and I inspected the walls of Jerusalem that were broken down and its gates that had been destroyed by fire.

This gate was located on the south wall of the city and led to the Valley of Hinnom where garbage was dumped (and where in time past child sacrifices had been made; 2 Kings 23:10; Jeremiah 7:31). The term translated as dung can also be translated as ash (Job 2:8).
