Why had Nehemiah “told no one” his plans?

Nehemiah 2:12 (ESV)

12 Then I arose in the night, I and a few men with me. And I told no one what my God had put into my heart to do for Jerusalem. There was no animal with me but the one on which I rode.

This piece of information links to the secrecy of his nighttime investigation. We need to read this information in light of the hostility embodied in Nehemiah 2:10, namely, that Sanballat and Tobiah were greatly displeased that someone had come to pursue the welfare of the people of Israel. Given his recent arrival in the city, Nehemiah did not know what level of influence and/or collaboration these two men might have within the city. There was no need to awaken opposition before plans could be finalized and initial actions taken. Obviously he will have shared sufficient of his thoughts with the few men who went out with him that night so that they could show him what he needed to see.
