What does Paul mean by “at the right time”?

Romans 5:6 (ESV)

6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.

In short

By at the right time Paul means

  1. at the time when we were still weak; or

  2. the time that suited God’s purpose for creation.

Most likely, Paul has in mind that at the time when we were still weak, Christ died for us. We can deduce that this is Paul’s meaning for two reasons. First, he opens Romans 5:6 with the conjunction for, which connects it with what he writes in Romans 5:5. What he writes in Romans 5:5 is that God’s love has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit. Thus, the fact that God loves us is on Paul’s mind, which is further highlighted by the fact that Christ dies for us at the time when we are weak. Second, there are grammatical connections between Romans 5:6 and Romans 5:8, where Paul writes that God shows his love to us in that Christ died for us while we were sinners. Again, Paul highlights the love of God by pointing out that Christ would die for us at the time when we are sinners. Likewise, Romans 5:6 is emphasizing that Christ dies for us at the time when we were still weak.

Some contend that when Paul uses the phrase at the right time, he has in mind that Christ came at just the right time in salvation history. That is, at just the right time in God’s plan, Christ came to die for us while we were weak. These point out that other passages refer to Christ’s coming as the consummation of the ages, so Paul is likely doing the same thing in Romans 5:6.

The problem with this view is that when Paul refers to the fact that Christ came at the right time, he normally points this out. For example, in Galatians 4:4 Paul says Christ came in the fullness of time. Further, the context emphasizes the surprising fact that Christ would die for us while we are his enemies, but does not refer to the timing of God’s plan at all.

Thus, when Paul says that Christ died for the weak at the right time, he means that at the time when we were still weak, Christ died for us.

Interpretation 1:
Paul means at the time when we were still weak.

Summary:

Paul is making clear that Christ died for us at the very time when we were still weak, that is, sinful and ungodly. In other words, God’s love for us is so great that he would send Christ to die for us at the time that we are ungodly.

Christ not only died to save us from our sins, but he did so while we were God’s enemies. This has profound implications for our lives, for it means we should love and serve not only those who love us but also our enemies.

Minor differences:

Our authors agree that Paul is saying Christ died for us at the time when we were still weak.

There are slight differences between our authors. For James Dunn, Paul is saying that Christ died at the time when we were still weak, but that the afflictions of our weakness demonstrate that the last days are upon us. In other words, according to Dunn, our weakness indicates that we are in the last phases of salvation history, and it is at this perfect time that God has acted through Christ.1

On the other hand, for Frank Thielman, Paul simply has in mind that Christ died for us at the very time when we were still weak. Interestingly, Thielman equates the term weak with inadequate faith.2 So he believes Paul is saying that Christ died for us at the very time when our faith was inadequate.

Interpretation 2:
Paul means the time that suited God’s purpose for creation.

Summary:

God has an eternal plan for his creation. Knowing that humans would sin and need rescue, he sends Christ at just the right moment in salvation history to reconcile humans to himself. Thus, Christ died at just the right time to execute God’s salvific purpose.
