1. Jeremiah 21:6 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What will happen to Judah because the Lord is against them?

Jeremiah 21:6 (ESV)

6 And I will strike down the inhabitants of this city, both man and beast. They shall die of a great pestilence.

The Lord himself is going to strike down the inhabitants of this city, both man and beast. He is going to hand them over to Nebuchadnezzar who will destroy the city and take King Zedekiah and what is left of the people into exile.

As in Jeremiah 21:5 the devastating impact of the Lord’s judgment is brought home with the use of nouns that come in groups of three. In Jeremiah 21:7 the city will be overcome with pestilence, sword, and famine (see Jeremiah 14:12). The human agents the Lord will use against Judah are also described as Nebuchadnezzar, their enemies, and those who seek their lives. Nebuchadnezzar’s lack of mercy is described as he shall have no pity, or spare them, or have compassion.1
