The structure of 1 Chronicles 12:1–22

1 Chronicles 12:1–22 (ESV)

1 Now these are the men who came to David at Ziklag, while he could not move about freely because of Saul the son of Kish. And they were among the mighty men who helped him in war.

In 1 Chronicles 12:1–22 the Chronicler uses a by-now familiar structure, the geographical chiasm.1 He arranges the various tribal groupings around three geographical locations:

  • Hebron (1 Chronicles 11:10)

    • Supporters at Ziklag: Benjaminites (1 Chronicles 12:1–7)

      • Supporters at the stronghold: Gadites (1 Chronicles 12:8–15)

      • Supporters at the stronghold: Benjamin and Judah (1 Chronicles 12:16–18)

    • Supporters at Ziklag: Manasseh (1 Chronicles 12:19–22)

  • Hebron (1 Chronicles 12:23)2
