Was Abner a prince?

2 Samuel 3:38 (ESV)

38 And the king said to his servants, “Do you not know that a prince and a great man has fallen this day in Israel?

The word translated as prince is a term used for a military commander and not a direct descendant of the king.1 Abner was thus not a prince in the sense that the word is typically understood today.
