What were the people pleased about the response of David to the death of Abner?

2 Samuel 3:36 (ESV)

36 And all the people took notice of it, and it pleased them, as everything that the king did pleased all the people.

David’s response to the death of Abner was considered to be very appropriate by the people of Judah. He behaved in a kingly manner when he mourned the death of a loyal subject.1
