Why was Abner buried at Hebron?

2 Samuel 3:32 (ESV)

32 They buried Abner at Hebron. And the king lifted up his voice and wept at the grave of Abner, and all the people wept.

Abner was a Benjamite (1 Samuel 9:1; 1 Samuel 14:50–51) and thus it would be expected that he should be buried in his home village. Under ordinary circumstances that is what would have happened. In this case, David honoured Abner by burying him in the royal city of Hebron,1 the town in which the patriarchs and their wives were buried (Genesis 23:16–20; Genesis 25:9–10; Genesis 35:27–29; Genesis 49:31; Genesis 50:12–13).
