Why did Rechab and Baanah behead Ish-bosheth?

2 Samuel 4:7 (ESV)

7 When they came into the house, as he lay on his bed in his bedroom, they struck him and put him to death and beheaded him. They took his head and went by the way of the Arabah all night,

Rechab and Baanah cut off the head of Ish-bosheth so that they could take it to David as proof that he had died. The decapitation of Ish-bosheth is reminiscent of the death of Saul (1 Samuel 31:8–9).1
