What do we know about Gibeon?

2 Samuel 2:12 (ESV)

12 Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon.

Gibeon was a town to the northeast of Jerusalem in the territory of Benjamin.1 It was a city meant to be set aside for the priests (Joshua 21:17; 1 Chronicles 6:60), possibly also the central place for worship after the destruction of Shiloh (1 Chronicles 16:39; 1 Kings 3:4).2 During his life, Saul acted treacherously toward the Gibeonites (2 Samuel 21:1–14).3
