The men of Jabesh-gilead had shown love toward Saul and now David prayed for the Lord to bless them in response, just as Saul had prayed for David’s blessing when David had shown love toward him (see 1 Samuel 24:17–19).1 David’s wish highlights the old covenant principle whereby there is blessing for those who obey the Lord and walk in his ways (see Deuteronomy 28:1–14).2 He also recognized that the Lord is the true source of blessing and the true Lord of Israel,3 and that his purpose as king was to advance the kingdom of God.
5 David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh-gilead and said to them, “May you be blessed by the LORD, because you showed this loyalty to Saul your lord and buried him.
