Jonathan’s affirmations of support had come at key moments in David’s life and were deeply appreciated by him.1 He recognized David as the future king (1 Samuel 18:3–4). He interceded on David’s behalf with his father, Saul (1 Samuel 19:1–7) and helped him to escape Jerusalem when it was clear that reconciliation was not possible (1 Samuel 20:1–42). He also went to visit David when he was in the wilderness so as to encourage him (1 Samuel 23:16–18).
26 I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan; very pleasant have you been to me; your love to me was extraordinary, surpassing the love of women.
