David lamented the fact that the enemies of Israel were rejoicing following the defeat of Saul and his armies. The whole community had been humiliated.1 The failures of God’s people displayed before the world bring shame.2 Throughout Philistia (Gath and Ashkelon),3 the Philistines were no doubt singing to the glory of their god Dagon (1 Samuel 5:1–12). God’s name was dishonoured as a result since the Philistines would have thought that he is not strong enough to protect his people.4
20 Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Ashkelon, lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised exult.
