1. Romans 8:2 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Should Romans 8:2 read “set you free” or “set me free”?

Romans 8:2 (ESV)

2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

A relatively small number of manuscripts contain the word se, i.e. set you free—the reading followed by the ESV in Romans 8:2 instead of me, i.e. hath made me free (KJV, see also NIV). The latter reading is to be preferred as it allows for the more the personal tone of the preceding chapter, Romans 7:1–25, to continue to resound longer.1
