What does presenting one’s members as instruments for unrighteousness mean?

In Romans 6:13 Paul explains what the alternative is to being a slave to sin: Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. The apostle here employs the more expressive word, weapons (hopla in the Greek), which the ESV translates as instruments, and he also writes concretely about our our body parts (melè in the Greek), which the ESV renders members. In the original Greek these words could therefore be rendered as Do not place your body parts at the disposal of sin to be used as weapons for unrighteousness (Romans 6:13a). When people surrender to their passions, they do so with their eyes, hands, and feet. A person places those body parts at the disposal of sin, and sin uses these to steal, injure, curse, begrudge, etc. Sin can do whatever it wants with the means that we place at its disposal. Doing so means handing our body parts over as weapons in the hand of sin so as to cause injustice to others (injury, betrayal, damage, neglect, etc.).¹
