1. Romans 6:4 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

How was Christ raised by the glory of the Father?

Romans 6:4 (ESV)

4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

In Romans 6:4 Paul writes that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. Now Paul is not describing a symbolic union (with the death of Jesus), but a new reality. Christ has risen; death is conquered; we are close to the Father!

We, who are united with him, will share in this new life on the other side of law and sin, namely in the heavenly life in the glory of God. Some translations speak of a resurrection by the power of the Father. However, the Greek uses the word doxa, which means bliss, splendour, glory). Christ’s resurrection happens not only by the power of the Father, but also through sharing in the divine glory. Lazarus was raised with power, but Jesus is raised to a higher splendour or glory. God seats him at his right hand.1
