The symbolic cup of wrath shapes the whole passage, and the sword the Lord is sending, the Babylonians, will cause all the nations to be drunk and vomit, fall and rise no more.
As in Jeremiah 25:16, the Lord’s judgment will make the nations be like a drunk person that falls and is unable to get up again. The word vomit
may refer to giving up riches taken as bounty from previous raids on other nations.1
27 “Then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Drink, be drunk and vomit, fall and rise no more, because of the sword that I am sending among you.’
